"The surname McNevin or Nevin or Navin is an anglicised form of the old Gaelic name Mac Cnaimhim. The name can be traced to the powerful sept of the territory of Ui Maine, in County Galway. The chief of the clan lived at Crannagh-Macnevin in the parish of Tynagh, near Loughrea and the family held considerable property there until recent times. The family were well known as erenaghs (they were lay lords whose family held church titles and property from generation to generation. The surname appears regularly in the Annals of the Four Masters, important chronicles of Gaelic Irish life in the medieval period. The first recorded instance of the name occurs in the Annal of 1159 when the Galway sept were registered. A descendant, Hugh MacNevin was hanged in 1602 for his participation in the resistance of Elizabethan aggression. The members of the clan were famous as both poets and physicians. Three of the name (Gilpatrick, Lucas and Patrick) were represented by long poems in the book of Magauran. The most celebrated physician was William James MacNevin (1763-1841). His uncle Baron MacNevin (1723-1790) emigrated to Austria where he was physician to the Empress Maria Theresa."
See, so you do have a history!! I also heard of, but have so far failed to verify, an instance in the 1600s where a batch of the clan were driven from Scotland back to Ireland because of their part in a big sheep rustling conspiracy. Several of them were supposedly hanged from a tree and this is supposed to be the reason for the family trait of the men hating to wear neckties!!
